Spread the love

New parents worry when their newborn baby is not pooping but passing gas. It is a common concern, but most of the time, it is not a reason for alarm. In this article, we will explore some of the reasons why a newborn baby might not be pooping but passing gas, and what you can do to help your baby.

Newborn Digestive System

A newborn baby’s digestive system is still developing, and it can take time to fully function. The digestive system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. These organs work together to break down food and eliminate waste.

In the first days of life, a baby will pass meconium, a dark and sticky substance made up of amniotic fluid, mucus, and other substances that were in the baby’s digestive system while in the womb. After this, the baby’s bowel movements will change, and they will start to pass stool that is more like what we expect.

  1. Breastfeeding: Breastfed babies may not poop as frequently as formula-fed babies. Breast milk is easily digested, and babies absorb most of it, leaving very little waste. Breastfed babies can go several days without pooping, and this is normal.
  2. Formula: Formula-fed babies usually poop more frequently than breastfed babies. However, some babies may still have a hard time passing stool, especially if they are sensitive to the type of formula they are being given.
  3. Immature digestive system: A newborn baby’s digestive system is still developing, and it can take some time for it to fully function. As a result, some babies may have a hard time passing stool, and they may only pass gas.
  4. Constipation: Constipation is a common problem in babies, especially when they start to eat solid foods. Constipation can cause discomfort and make it difficult for the baby to pass stool.
  5. Dehydration: If a baby is not getting enough fluids, they may become dehydrated, which can cause them to have difficulty passing stool.

What can I do to help my baby?

If your baby is passing gas but not pooping, there are a few things you can do to help them:

  1. Breastfeeding: If you are breastfeeding, continue to do so on demand. Breast milk is easily digested, and your baby will absorb most of it, leaving very little waste.
  2. Formula: If you are formula feeding, check with your pediatrician to make sure you are using the right formula. Some babies may be sensitive to certain types of formula, and switching to a different one may help.
  3. Massage: Gently massaging your baby’s tummy can help stimulate bowel movements. Use a clockwise motion, and be gentle.
  4. Bicycle legs: Holding your baby’s legs and gently moving them in a bicycling motion can also help stimulate bowel movements.
  5. Warm bath: A warm bath can help relax your baby and stimulate bowel movements.
  6. Check with your pediatrician: If your baby is still not pooping after a few days, or if they seem uncomfortable, check with your pediatrician. They may be able to offer additional suggestions or recommend a treatment.

When to seek medical attention

While it is normal for breastfed babies to go several days without pooping, formula-fed babies should have at least one bowel movement a day. If your baby has not pooped in more than two days, or if they seem uncomfortable, it is a good idea to check with your pediatrician.
